A mortar launcher that started a security alert at Dublin Port was bound for a private authority in Northern Ireland, police accept.

Gardaí (Irish police) went to the occurrence on Thursday at about 01:00 nearby time.

ATO announced the weapon, a decommissioned Russian-made 82mm KRH 36Y mortar launcher, safe and said no weapons were available.

  • It was being moved in a van.
  • A gardaí spokessman said that “as of now” they were “fulfilled that there was no criminal goal” in its importation.
  • The launcher was found by Revenue and Customs officials completing a standard profile on approaching port traffic.
  • They halted an Eastern European-enlisted van and the weapon was spotted.

The region was cordoned off and the Irish armed force bomb removal group was called to the scene.

The weapon is as of now being analyzed by the ballistics segment of the Garda Technical Bureau.

Gardaí are liasing with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) with respect to the importation of the weapon.
